We were greeted and checked in by a very professional yet friendly Mr. Daniel. He pointed out and recommended numerous must-see attractions and restaurants as this was our first time in San Antonio. Our room was on the 4th floor and I was hopeful of a good view. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. But the room was nice and cool on a hot June day (97°). The bed and pillows were comfortable and clean. Our only complaint is the smallness and layout of the bathroom. It is not suitable for a couple to shower or bathe together, not even for one normal sized person. The toilet is right inside the door jammed between the wall and the sink. You have to put the lid down to flush. On a positive note the hotel is said to be undergoing a $50 million dollar renovation so hopefully something will be done about the bathroom? the toiletries are great and include hand soap, body lotion, face soap, shampoo, conditioner and body wash all in pump dispensers except for the face soap. The hotel is very charming and has beautiful architecture. I recommend parking across the valet parking garage at St. Mary's Garage; very reasonable rates. Don't be fooled though because there is another parking garage right next to Mary's that is a lot more expensive.

The staff was great.
Libby with housekeeping, was so happy and accommodating to my husband and I. Always helping us.
Linda, with the restaurant was also very happy and helpful. She always has a smile on her face. Smithy, the manager and George at the bar are Wonderful! He mixes the best drinks!
The Gunter hotel is beautiful and we will definitely come back again!

The hotel is in a great location... and I understood booking that it was "historic." Downstairs was really nice. However, there were updates that could have been done (ie. carpets in the hallway and updated furniture in the rooms) that would better meet the "Marriott standard." The room was very comfortable, despite being old. What was unforgiving is that the toilet was like one found in an old school or gas station and required using your foot to flush. (I have NEVER been in a hotel with a toilet like this) and the tub was so old, that the stopper was not even placed in it when we arrived. The plus is the EXCELLENT customer service! Daniel, at the front desk, gets 10 out of 10 (plus)!

Think twice about choosing to stay at this hotel! Unless you are ok with an overall dirty room and place no value on a comfortable nights rest. Absolutely terrible stay. With all due respect to the hotel’s historical charm and aesthetics the rooms are dirty, the carpet is dirty and smells of mildew. The beds are old, beyond uncomfortable and have metal springs that protrude through the very thin mattress cover and scratchy linens. We stayed this past weekend and our room was dark, we went to draw the curtains only to see that the windows were frosted! Barely any light came through. I can only imagine how horrible of a view that must be for the hotel to feel that they should cover the windows in such a manner. After 2 hours of trying to sleep…. All I could feel and hear were the metal springs! I called the front desk and asked for a different room. @ almost 1 am we moved into another room to find that the bed was exactly the SAME! I could not believe this is what a Marriott brand had to offer! Seriously contemplated just going home @ 2 am! Ultimately decided to stay and just tossed and turned. No sleep! We could not wait to leave! Then to add insult… there was NO HOT water from the shower nor the sink! To say this was a horrible stay is an understatement. The lack of concern from the front desk staff was frustrating and we left the hotel completely disappointed and disgusted. We expected better from Marriott

Room was frigid (which we loved), customer service was delightful, and it was near all the attractions downtown. Only concern was the continental breakfast which served 'overnight oats' which means they were cold. I liked them but would have rather had a waffle. 🙂

Gunter unfortunately had water issues for 4 of my 5 days, resulting in a running water outage, a leak which caused my room to be uninhabitable (per the hotel) and me being asked to move rooms, fans set up to dry the hallways (some 32 hours later), and a hazardous cleanup van parked out front with it's lights on. It's not clear these are all related events, since they spanned a Tuesday into a Friday.

Unrelated, the room I was moved into had a distinctly musty odor and a sticky floor, signs of an old poorly-maintained roadside motel. I had the sheets changed out since they were especially smelly.

The first two floors looked nice but the bar wasn't open at lunchtime one day and I couldn't be bothered to try again.

Location is wonderful, but there are a lot of hotels nearby. This one is a relic of the past and needs a complete interior overhaul, apparently to include a new plumbing system. Until then, quality of rooms is on par with a Motel 6.
